Artist's Point of View

87,000 tons of plastic - bottles, children’s toys, fishing nets and even electronics are all out there in the middle of the ocean – The Plastic Garbage Patch. According to a recent article in the New York Times the Plastic Garbage Patch is ‘four times the size of California and comprising an estimated 1.8 trillion pieces of rubbish.’ From my understanding, if it would stay as is, it would be easier to clean up. But it doesn’t! It breaks down into tiny particles that the sea life eats. How would you like a bit of plastic with your salmon?  Fortunately, the Times article states that only a small percentage of patch has broken down.  So there is time to clean a lot of it up before most of it is turned into microplastics.
