Artist's Point of View

After I made this card I read that purple sea urchins might be able to adapt to the acidity of the ocean unlike green urchins and not lose their shells if the acidity reaches extreme levels. Oops, but then I read a study (found on the website, futurity.org) done by researchers from UC Davis, UC Merced, and UC Santa Cruz that talked about millions of purple sea urchins and tiny sea stars that died along the California coast. The die off was significant because the same thing had happened in their lab study. At the same time the sea urchins died on the coast, the researchers walked into their lab and thousands of purple sea urchin that were fed directly by seawater had also died. They eventually believed that the cause was a result to ‘a harmful algal bloom that was due to a combination of global warming, ocean acidification, and land-use changes.’ Hence, I named this card, ‘Destroyed Beauty’ to commemorate all of the purple sea urchins that died there.
