Algal Bloom
Artist's Point of View

A few years ago as I was cutting clay slabs, I became intrigued by the marks that were made by the knife and clay on the canvas. They were human marks - made in the process of working, making something.  Since I felt these ‘clay marks’ had a human connection, I started to incorporate them into my silkscreens giving them what I felt was a human connection.  I used them in this abstract piece called ‘Algal Bloom,’ as well as others. Some ‘Algal Bloom’ are caused by phosphorus runoffs from farms, sewage, and industry, and in turn leave ‘dead zones’ where it is difficult for fish to survive. I grew up on a farm an hour away from Lake Michigan and always return each summer to visit family. A couple of summers ago, as I was walking the beaches of Lake Michigan, I noticed the water was green with what seemed like a lot of algae in it. I’m not sure this was what is called an ‘Algal Bloom,’ but it is what was the inspiration for this piece.
